Even in times gone by, the old Brenner Road was a thorough fare for emperors and kings. During the Middle Ages, on their way to Rome for their coronation, or when soldiers and armies need to make their way from the North to the South, they had to find a way across the Brenner Pass. The Franzensfeste was a strong fortification for many, as stories handed down from generation to generation recall. Today, the Franzensfeste and Mittewald are little villages. They are just the right size to enjoy a bit of culture and history, while resting at the side of the old Brenner Road. Twice as relaxing!
