Fortezza

One of Europe’s strongest fortresses

Fortezza is an impressive fortress from massive blocks of granite. With a size of 65,000 m² it dominates the gorge South of the reservoir. Inside, Fortezza is a gigantic maze of rooms, walkways and stairs. The upper fortress is connected with the lower fortress by a spectacular staircase with 451 steps. Fortress Fortezza was built between 1833-39, named after Emperor Franz I of Austria and was the strongest fortress of its time in Europe. But this fortress never saw any war and its technology soon became outdated.

Since 2005 the fortress Fortezza has been open to the public. It houses the permanent exhibitions “The history of Fortezza”, “Info point Brenner base-level tunnel” and “Bunkers - the world beyond”. In addition Fortezza offers special exhibitions.
