A town full of beautiful artwork

Art and culture in Brixen

Brixen’s rich history has made it the spiritual and cultural centre of South Tyrol. The town’s spectacular buildings are a reminder of its glorious past and the significant role once played by the church. With its ornate allegorical ceiling frescoes, the late-baroque seminary library in the old town is an excellent example of this. The Neustift Monastery of the Augustinian Canons – just a ten-minute car journey from the town centre – is also home to buildings and artwork from across the centuries dating right back to the Middle Ages. And if you’re looking for something more recent, the City Gallery in Brixen’s famous arcades uses contemporary art to provide a political, social and economic commentary on modern society. Art and culture in Brixen

Are guided cultural and town tours available in Brixen?

Yes. Depending on the season, the programme ranges from classic old-town tours to themed walks about architecture, history, customs and local personalities. Some cultural venues also offer their own tours. Check the language, date, duration, meeting point and booking requirements; groups can often request a private tour.

What cultural activities can I enjoy in Brixen on a rainy day?

On a rainy day, consider the Hofburg and Diocesan Museum, the Pharmacy Museum, Neustift Abbey, exhibitions, concerts or readings. The cathedral and cloister also fit easily into a short old-town walk. Museums and cultural centres have different closing days, so check the current events calendar and opening hours before setting out.

Which museums and cultural venues can I visit in Brixen?

Brixen brings together local history, sacred art and contemporary culture. Key venues include the Hofburg and Diocesan Museum, the Pharmacy Museum, the cathedral and cloister, the seminary and its library, as well as galleries and cultural centres. Nearby Neustift Abbey adds another major cultural site. Check current opening hours and closing days before visiting.

Which cultural sights should I not miss in Brixen?

Start in Cathedral Square with the cathedral and cloister, then continue to the Hofburg, the arcades and the Stufels quarter. Together, these places reveal the town’s religious, civic and architectural history. With more time, add the Pharmacy Museum, a current exhibition or Neustift Abbey just outside Brixen.

Is Neustift Abbey worth visiting?

Yes. Neustift Abbey combines monastic history, art, architecture, a library, a church and winegrowing. Located north of Brixen, it works well as a half-day excursion. The areas open to visitors and the availability of guided tours depend on current operations, so check travel information, opening hours and tickets in advance.

Where can I find current exhibitions, concerts and cultural events?

Brixen’s events calendar brings together current exhibitions, concerts, theatre, readings, tours and festivals. For last-minute changes, tickets and reservations, also check the page of the individual venue or organiser. Use the date and category filters to find an event that suits your plans.
