Insider tips and popular trekking routes in Brixen
There are so many options to choose from when setting out on a hike from Brixen. The first question to ask yourself is whether you would rather stick to the valley or venture a little higher.
Maybe you fancy a wander along the Eisack river or a stroll through vineyards and orchards? Or you might prefer to head to the foothills for a walk through the chestnut groves? Or perhaps you’re looking for more of a challenge? In that case, a hike through the region’s high Alpine pastures or the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site is the perfect choice for you.

Hiking in Brixen
Yes. Depending on the season, the programme ranges from relaxed food and themed walks to more demanding mountain hikes, sunset outings and full-moon walks. Local guides share insights into nature and culture while supporting safe mountain travel. Before booking, check the date, language, duration, elevation gain, equipment and fitness requirements.
Yes. Short, gentle routes follow the rivers, the promenades around town and selected family and themed trails. Mount Plose also has walks combining play, nature and views. Even so, check the surface, gradients and pushchair suitability, as a route described as easy is not necessarily step-free throughout.
Brixen offers valley walks, routes through vineyards, orchards and chestnut groves, and Alpine hikes on Mount Plose and in the Dolomites. You can choose from short circular walks, village-to-village routes, hut trails, summit hikes and longer stages. For every route, check the distance, elevation gain, difficulty, trail conditions and current weather.
Mount Plose rises above Brixen and can be reached by public transport, car and cable car, depending on the season. Panoramic, family and summit trails start from the upper stations. Timetables and lift operations change seasonally, so check them in advance and allow enough time for the return journey, including a backup plan if the weather changes.
Valley and mid-altitude walks are often possible from spring well into autumn. High pastures and summit routes are generally best in summer and early autumn, depending on snow and weather. Autumn brings chestnut groves and clear views. Always check current conditions, as temperatures and trail surfaces can vary considerably between town and mountain.
Brixen’s hiking and tour pages provide information on distance, duration, elevation gain and difficulty, and many routes include maps or digital tracks. Use them for planning, but do not rely solely on your phone in the mountains. Carry an offline map, keep your battery charged and check current notices about closures or diversions.
For easy walks, sturdy comfortable footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are usually sufficient. Mountain and summit hikes require grippy walking boots, rain and sun protection, enough water and food, a first-aid kit and any route-specific equipment. Check the difficulty and weather beforehand, and turn back if the conditions or your fitness are not suitable.
