KOKOSCHKA REVIVAL | A MESA USC

Franzensfeste Fortress

A Mesa Usc combines German and Ladin dialects to address the concept of political borders. Here, music is experienced both as a means of transgression and as a landscape. At its centre is the oral memory of women: folk song traditions demonstrate their potential to preserve, renegotiate, and evolve cultural identities in border regions. Based on recordings from Friuli Venezia Giulia—including the Anutis quartet, the Stu Ledi choir, and Pashto singers Ismail Swati and Maryam Rashid—the tonal dramaturgy is expanded with new recordings from South Tyrol. The site-specific installation builds on the work Sot Glas, which brings voices and memories to life in a unique space, and is created in close collaboration with sound artist Renato Rinaldi, light designer Giulio Olivero, and Fabio Brusadin, with additional light design by Nicolò Brunetto.
