Törggelen in Brixen
The traditional Törggelen season begins in autumn around the grape harvest and usually continues into the run-up to Christmas. Exact start dates and opening days depend on the harvest, the individual venue and the season. Some places offer Törggelen menus only on selected days or by reservation, so check directly before visiting.
Typical dishes include barley soup, a hearty meat platter with sauerkraut and sausages, dumplings or Schlutzkrapfen, followed by roasted chestnuts and sweet pastries. Grape must, young wine or Eisack Valley wine is served alongside the meal. Menus vary by farm and season, so ask about vegetarian alternatives when booking.
Törggelen is a South Tyrolean autumn tradition centred on tasting young wine and seasonal dishes in farm taverns, wine farms or inns. Originally, people gathered after the grape harvest around the “Torggl”, or wine press. Today, Törggelen combines convivial meals, regional cooking and often a walk through vineyards and chestnut groves.
Törggelen is offered in farm taverns, wine farms, inns and selected restaurants in Brixen and the surrounding villages. The experience is defined not only by the menu but also by its connection to winegrowing, farming and the season. Use the current listings and book directly, as places and opening days may be limited.
Yes. The combination of Törggelen with a walk or hike is central to the tradition. Easy routes through vineyards, chestnut groves and villages lead to many places around Brixen. Choose a walk suited to the daylight, weather and your fitness, and confirm that the venue is open.
Booking is strongly recommended, especially at weekends and for groups. Many Törggelen venues have limited seating, set menus or selected opening days. When reserving, state the number of guests, preferred time, dietary needs and any children. Also plan your outward and return journey, particularly if the farm is outside a village centre.
Törggelen can work well for families when the walk, meal time and atmosphere suit the children’s age. Vegetarian alternatives may be available but are not automatically part of every traditional menu. When booking, ask specifically about meat-free dishes, allergens, high chairs and children’s portions so the venue can give you a realistic answer.
