LIMINAL STATE | +3° HOT MACHINES

Urban Lab, Schenoni Areal

We think of machines as cold, glacial beings — yet they generate more heat than living organisms and thereby contribute to the melting of ice.

Almost all human activities rely on machines that consume energy and produce heat — from light bulbs and cars to computers and AI. Data centres require enormous amounts of electricity and generate heat capable of warming thousands of households; around 40% of this energy is used for cooling. The installation renders visible what usually remains hidden: close to the ground, fog fills the space and encounters rising warm currents from lamps and screens at its centre. The smoke ascends, revealing the thermal flows that heat our environment, making perceptible the invisible energy that burdens our world.

Liminal State

Italy

Transmedia artists Saverio Villirillo and Gregorio Comandini explore the relationship between human and machine. Their installations, exhibitions and social practices lead audiences into a liminal space between perception, consciousness and imagination — as a source of enchantment beyond cynical realism.
